The wedding speech

Tips for writing a speech for a wedding.

1. Before writing, think about this

  • What do you want to convey with your speech? Emotion, gratitude, a touch of humor?
  • Who are you talking to? Only the bride and groom, the family, all the guests?
  • Decide on the tone: do you want it to be romantic, funny, formal, or a mix?

A good speech should sound like you, not like text taken from a book.

2. Simple structure so you don’t get lost

A speech doesn’t need to be long. With this basic structure, you’ll have everything you need:

  1. Greet and thank
Example: “Dear friends and family, thank you for being here…”
  2. Tell something brief and beautiful
How you met the couple, a funny or tender anecdote.
  3. Talk about them
What you admire, what makes them unique, how they complement each other.
  4. Give them a personal message
A wish for their future, words from the heart.
  5. Close with something that stays in the memory
An emotional phrase, a toast, a short quote (only if it fits you).

3. Practical tips

  • Don’t make it eternal: 2-3 minutes is perfect (about 300-400 words).
  • Make it your own: Use your words, don’t try to sound too formal.
  • Don’t get into trouble: No private jokes that no one understands, or uncomfortable memories.
  • Give real examples: Better “I saw them taking care of every detail” than “they are very affectionate”.
  • Rehearse it out loud: This way you control the rhythm and emotions.

4. Things you can add if you want

  • A quote about love (short and meaningful).
  • Some nice metaphor: “their love is like a lighthouse in the middle of the storm”.
  • A touch of humor, if it suits you and the bride and groom.

Speech example

“Dear friends and family, thank you for joining us on this special day. Today we not only celebrate a wedding, we celebrate the love story between [Name] and [Name].
I have been lucky enough to see how they take care of each other, how they support each other, and how they make each other happy. That is true love.
I wish them a life full of laughter, adventures, and lots of love. Let’s toast to them and all the moments they have left to live!”
