Wedding celebrant

What is a wedding officiant?

A wedding officiant is the person responsible for conducting the wedding ceremony, with a fully personalized, tailor-made script. They are flexible with schedules and dates, which allows for a wide choice of venues.

We celebrate symbolic civil weddings, silver and golden wedding anniversaries, vow renewals, anniversaries, surprise ceremonies, and even civil baptisms for those seeking an alternative to religious services. This is also because legal ceremonies held at the town hall usually take place on a fixed day and time, several couples are often summoned at the same entrance, the altar cannot be decorated because it is the councillor’s desk, and there is often not enough space for all the guests. For this reason, many couples look for more flexible options with personalized scripts, like the ones we offer.

Are these official ceremonies?

The ceremonies we perform are symbolic and have no legal validity, although, if the couple wishes, they may appear legal to the guests.

If you want a legal ceremony, you must first complete the procedure at the civil registry to legally register your marriage or civil partnership. For many couples, however, this is not really their wedding: it is the legal, formal part, where there is no need to exchange rings or perform any ceremonial actions. It is a simple procedure involving the couple and two witnesses at the registry office, where decoration is not allowed and guests usually do not attend.

For many people, it is similar to registering any other event or procedure before a notary. In a legal ceremony, the wording cannot be changed, which means you will have exactly the same ceremony as everyone else. It does not reflect anything personal about the couple. So treat it for what it is: the legal part. Then we can hold your civil ceremony with all your guests, in a garden, on the beach, or wherever you choose, and that will be the ceremony you will truly remember.

To carry out the civil registry ceremony, you may need to gather information and start the paperwork about three months before the wedding, except if one of you is a foreign national, in which case more time will be required.

Can it be done in English or even in two languages?

Yes. Our team conducts ceremonies in English, French, Swedish, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Request a no-obligation video call, where you can check our pronunciation and at the same time we will explain how we usually conduct our ceremonies.

Choosing a friend or a professional

For some couples, choosing between a professional officiant or a friend or family member is not easy. Below are some points to help you decide.

But first, let’s look at the three options available to you:

  1. You can hire a professional officiant who will take care of everything: designing and writing your ceremony, helping you choose the music and ritual, guiding family members and friends who will take part, and coordinating the ceremony on the big day.
  2. Another option is to use part of their services, such as providing a complete ceremony script to be officiated by someone else of your choice. This could be a close family member, even two close relatives, or anyone you feel is suitable for the role.
  3. Finally, you can ask one or more close friends to take full responsibility for creating your ceremony.

Pros and cons of choosing a friend or family member as officiant

Advantages:

  • They know you well and will easily understand your wishes.
  • The cost is low, as there is no budget to worry about.
  • This adventure will strengthen your bond.
  • It is a strong sign of recognition, similar to asking someone close to be a witness.

Disadvantages:
– Your friend or family member will need writing skills and good public-speaking abilities to bring the ceremony to life.
– Helping to design the ceremony will take up your time.
– There will be fewer surprises and less spontaneity on the big day, as you will need to supervise the script.
– Your friend may not enjoy the ceremony as much as the rest of the guests.
– They will not have the experience of a professional.
– They may have to deal with stress and pressure, especially if unexpected situations arise.

Things to consider:
· Is your friend or family member genuinely happy to take on this role, or is it a polite “yes” because they do not feel able to refuse the commitment?
· Will they be willing to get as involved as you would like, and will they have the time to do so?
· Does their motivation match the couple’s expectations?

Pros and cons of choosing a professional

Advantages:

  • The officiant has experience and can make suggestions based on the couple, the number of guests, surprises, etc.
  • They are skilled writers and confident public speakers, able to move the guests and give meaning to your messages.
  • They will dedicate the necessary time to ensure the ceremony script is exactly to your liking.
  • They will relieve you of all the organizational concerns related to the ceremony, allowing you to fully trust them.
  • In most cases, a rehearsal is offered one or several days beforehand.

Disadvantages:
– The budget required for this type of service.

Things to consider:
· Speak with two or three officiants to see which one best matches your tastes and preferences.

Can we have a rehearsal a few days before?

If the couple requests it, we can certainly arrange a rehearsal one or several days beforehand.
If the ceremony is close to our place of residence, the budget is usually increased to cover travel expenses.
If the ceremony takes place in another province outside Málaga and requires an overnight stay in a hotel, the budget will need to be increased to cover these additional costs. hacer noche en un hotel, habría que aumentar el presupuesto con estos gastos extras.
